Summary: There's absolutely no doubt that month-on-month, Apple is catching up to market leader Samsung in the U.S. mobile market share race.

Latest comScore figures show that while Samsung remains at the top of the U.S. smartphone market share rankings, Apple is rapidly catching up to its staunch rival.

The figures for the August 2012 report, collected from more than 30,000 U.S. mobile subscribers, show that Samsung's share remains flat, compared to a significant growth for Apple. Interestingly, the figures close before the iPhone 5 was released -- let alone announced -- showing an increase in iPhone uptake ahead of the expected next-generation Apple smartphone.

Apple's smartphone share grew 2.1 percent -- the highest increase in mobile subscribers seen since April -- edging closer to second-place smartphone maker LG, which dropped by close to 1 percent in the three-month average period ending in August.

In the race for the top two podium spaces, it's clear that by comScore's next monthly report, Apple could rise to second place, ready and braced to take on the rival Android maker at the top of the rankings.

Though HTC grew by 0.2 percent in the August report, the Taiwanese firm continues to struggle with poor smartphone sales and sinking revenue. HTC's second-quarter earnings in July reported a 57 percent decline in net profit year-on-year.

Meanwhile, Google-owned Motorola Mobility dipped by 0.8 percent, currently standing at 11.2 percent of the U.S. smartphone market share.

On platform market share, only Apple and Google managed to secure an increase in subscribers, while the other platform makers saw a decline.

Android operating system increased marginally by 1.7 percent to 52.6 percent in total. Google, which develops the mobile operating system, said last month that there are more than 1.3 million Android activations per day, an increase from 1 million per day in June. In total, this represents more than a half-billion Android devices activated in total since the mobile software was first launched.

Apple, however, stormed ahead with its iOS software with an increase of 2.4 percent to 34.3 percent.

On the other hand, BlackBerry maker Research in Motion saw the greatest loss with 3.1 percent in the platform space. The ailing smartphone maker has seen consistent losses through the year, but has now dropped below the 10 percent mark to single figures in share.

Microsoft's Windows Phone and Nokia's Symbian operating systems declined by 0.4 percent each, representing bittersweet news for the Finnish phone maker.

Symbian's decline comes as a blessing for Nokia as it continues to plug the Windows Phone platform through its 'special relationship' with Microsoft. But for Microsoft, this represents a continued headache for the software giant as it seeks to drum up support for the mobile platform -- only weeks away from an expected Windows Phone 8 launch -- but falls below the radar in favor of the major players in the platform race.

Question by chasvanblom: What's the current High-tech "gadget"? I'm returning as a Substitute Teacher, beginning in September. What are the NEW HIGH-TECHIE "TOYS" that most kids are expected to bring into the classes where I will teach? I want to stay updated with the high-tech trends that migrate across the USA so I can be sure to use the proper lingo in class. Thanks for ideas. Best answer for What's the current High-tech "gadget"?:

Answer by Paul in San Diego
Kids these days are all into their phones and their iPods. With phones, texting is the big deal. There's also a trend lately for kids to do what's called "sexting," where they send sexually suggestive text and images of themselves to other kids (this is usually between 2 kids who are "going together" or between friends for a laugh. And, just texting can be addictive to them. A couple years ago, when my daughter started college, she didn't realize that she didn't have an unlimited texting account and that additional texts beyond 500 a month were charged 10 cents each (incoming and outgoing). She ended up making and receiving over 2000 text messages her first month and ran up a $ 180 phone bill. That's almost 70 text messages a day, with most of them being completely inane (like "What's up?" "Nothing" "What about U?" etc.).

Question by Dot 99: What constitutes an "electric gadget"? On a TV program it said the average household has a total of 25 electric gadgets. Does this include anything that is electric or not include something that has to be turned on. What does this mean? Best answer for What constitutes an "electric gadget"?:

Answer by Pogo Possum
electric gadgets are tiny little robots that live in the walls and under the sofa. they come out at night and recharge the electronics in the house so the tv and toaster works the next day. 25 is the average but smaller houses have fewer. a dog house only has two or three because there is no tv or toaster there. if you see one pretend you didn't or they will get you while you sleep.

Microsoft stores to 'pop up' on October 26

SAN FRANCISCO â€" Scores of real-world Microsoft stores will "pop up" in the United States and Canada on October 26 to showcase the technology giant's latest gadgets including the new Surface tablet computer.

Microsoft websites on Tuesday promised that temporary, holiday-season shops with a "curated collection of Microsoft's coolest products" would open their doors on the date.

"Microsoft is excited to expand on its existing retail footprint to deliver an assortment of best-in-class products and a premium retail experience to new locations," the US tech giant said in a statement when the shops were announced.

"The holiday stores continue to offer customers the opportunity to learn new technology skills and get the most out of their Microsoft-enabled devices."

The list of more than 60 locations for the shops -- known as pop-ups because they have short or seasonal commercial leases -- included New York, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Vancouver and Toronto.

The company, which has been in the process of opening permanent retail stores in several US cities, is seeking to break into the competitive market for tablet computers with Surface, set to be released October 26.

Surface tablets are powered by new generation Windows 8 software set for release at the same time. Microsoft shops are likely to feature arrays of Windows 8 devices made by hardware partners.

Surface, which will compete against the market-leading iPad and others, features a flip-out rear "kickstand" to prop it up like a picture frame and a cover that, when opened, acts as a keypad so tablets could be switched into "desktop" mode for work tasks.

HTC One X+

It's smartphone season, with manufacturers racing to release the latest and greatest handsets before the holiday rush. Not content with playing second fiddle to Samsung, HTC saw fit to revamp its flagship phone, the HTC One X. The new HTC One X+ boasts a variety of hardware and software upgrades over its predecessor, but is it enough to take down the Galaxy S III? Read on for a side-by-side breakdown.

From a design standpoint, not much has changed between the original One X and the One X+. It's still slightly smaller than the S III, due in large part to the differences in screen size. The One X+ still uses the same polycarbonate unibody design as the original, which we preferred over the S III's plastic body with removable back. The One X+, much like its predecessor, features a 4.7-inch 1,280-by-720 Super LCD 2 screen, a tenth of an inch smaller than the S III's 4.8-inch 1,280-by-720 HD Super AMOLED display. Both screens offer the same resolution, but the One X+ has a slight advantage in pixel density, with 312 ppi vs. 306 ppi of the S III, thanks to its slightly smaller screen. An important distinction for some will be Samsung's use of a PenTile display, which some will find fuzzy or pixilated.

Unlike its predecessor, and nearly every high-end Android smartphone right now, the new One X+ will be the first LTE phone to use Nvidia's quad-core Tegra 3 chip. The new processor is clocked at 1.7GHz, whereas the S III uses a more common dual-core 1.5-GHz Qualcomm S4 chip. Both are speedy, no doubt, but the One X+ has an advantage in gaming, with access to the exclusive Tegra Zone game library. The One X+, with its unibody design, comes in only one storage flavor, but it's a generous 64GB. The S III tops out at 32GB internal, with the option to expand via microSD by up to 64GB for a total of 96GB. Both phones use a 2100mAh battery, but only Samsung's is removable, providing a bit more flexibility. Both phones also have 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, along with Bluetooth and NFC. The One X+ will also feature HTC's signature Beats Audio enhancements and a built-in FM radioâ€"both missing from the S III.

HTC One X+ vs S III

A big difference between these two smartphones comes on the software side. The One X+ will ship with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean at launch, making it one of a handful of smartphones equipped with Google's latest mobile OS. The S III is, for now, stuck with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, which is a fine option, but missing out on some of Google's latest innovations like the smoothness courtesy of Project Butter and Google Now. Samsung does promise an upgrade for the S III, but there's no exact timetable for release.

Both smartphones feature 8-megapixel rear-facing cameras that are capable of shooting 1080p HD video. The S III has a slight edge with its 1.9-megapixel front-facing camera, to the One X+'s 1.6 megapixels, but both are good for 720p video. The lens on the One X+ opens up to f/2, which lets in more light than the S III's f/2.6 aperture lens. The One X+ also features a 28mm wide angle lens, which should let you capture larger scenes from the same distance as the S III.

There is one big caveat for this comparison: HTC has yet to announce a price or release date for the One X+. Carrier compatibility will also be working against the One X+, as this phone is an AT&T exclusive. Both the S III and One X+ represent the top-end of the Android smartphone spectrum, and it's hard to say which exactly is the best choice. The original One X was eclipsed by the S III, but its successor certainly looks poised to compete. Which smartphone do you prefer? Let us know in the comments below, and stay tuned for our full review of the HTC One X+.
