The world's largest social network has finally reached the 1 billion active user mark, eight years after launch.

"If you're reading this: thank you for giving me and my little team the honor of serving you. Helping a billion people connect is amazing, humbling and by far the thing I am most proud of in my life," CEO Mark Zuckerberg said on Facebook's online newsroom

The social network, which started in a dorm room in 2004, reached the historic milestone at 12:45 p.m. PT on September 14. This now puts one in seven people in the world on the social network.
Zuckerberg also announced the milestone on NBC's Today show. The milestone does not include bots or fake users but real people with accounts who log into the site every month, NBC reported.
If Facebook were a country, it would be the third largest in the world, behind China with 1.34 billion people and India with 1.2 billion.
According to Facebook, the site has seen:
- 1.13 trillion "likes"
- 140.3 billion friend connections
- 219 billion photos uploaded (265 billion in all if deleted photos are counted)
- 17 billion location check-ins
- 62.6 million songs played 22 billion times since September 2011
The median age of users is 22 years old, Facebook said. When the social network hit 500 million users in July 2010, the median age was 23. People who joined in July 2010 now have an average of 305 friends.
The company also has more than 600 million mobile users -- up by 48 million from 552 million in June -- a key metric for those in developing nations who may not have stable access to a fixed-line Internet connection.

make sure that the base is connected to a power outlet that works, and that the phone jack is connected... then place the handset back onto the base unit to make sure it is registered... then try again... if it still fails, try moving the phone to a different location - there might be too much wireless interference where you have the phone connected...

Acer’s Windows 8 tablet, the Iconia W700, will hit shelves on October 26 the company has confirmed, one of the first slates to run Microsoft’s new platform. Announced back at Computex, the Iconia W700 has an 11.6-inch 1920 x 1080 Full HD IPS LCD touchscreen, with a choice of Ivy Bridge based Intel Core i3 or i5 processors lurking inside.
There’s also WiFi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth, a 1-megapixel front-facing camera, and a 5-megapixel main camera good for 1080p HD on the back. USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt is also onboard, and Acer will throw in an HDMI-to-VGA adapter if you’re not quite up to speed with the latest display connectivity. Storage is either a 64GB or 128GB SSD.
However, it’s the cradle which is perhaps most eye-catching, Acer’s asymmetrical design making slotting the W700 in straightforward, and opening up plenty of extra ports. It’ll also recharge the battery, which Acer says is good for eight hours of runtime.

(Reuters) - Google Inc said planned job cuts at its Motorola Mobility mobile phone unit will cost about $ 340 million in severance and other costs in the third quarter and it warned of further restructuring that may result in "significant" charges.
"Motorola has continued to refine its planned restructuring actions and now expects to broaden those actions to include additional geographic regions outside of the U.S.," the company said in a statement.
Google plans to shrink Motorola's operations in Asia by exiting unprofitable markets, abandoning low-end devices and focusing on a few models instead of dozens, the New York Times had reported earlier.
"Motorola continues to evaluate its plans and further restructuring actions may occur, which may cause Google to incur additional restructuring charges, some of which may be significant," the company said.
The Internet search giant said in August that it would cut 20 percent of the workforce at Motorola Mobility, which it bought for $ 12.5 billion last year, as it moves to make more smartphones and fewer simple mobiles.
By pairing Motorola's smartphone business with its Android software, Google may have a better chance of mounting a direct challenge to Apple Inc's popular iPhone.
The acquisition raised concerns on Wall Street as investors fretted that Google was entering a business with much lower profit margins and in which it had little experience.
Analysts were expecting Google to wind down many of Motorola's legacy businesses to fit its strategy.
Google shares were up $ 1.60 at $ 764.10 in trading before the bell on the Nasdaq on Thursday.

Question by J. ROSENBERG: I lost my Samsung Galaxy phone 5 hours ago, how do I use the "find my phone" app? I lost the phone in a movie theatre but when I returned no one had turned it in and it was not at the seat. I did have a "locate my phone" app on it but I just added it days ago and have never opened it. How would I locate the phone now? When I call it, it goes straight to voice mail which is weird since I did not turn it off.
