Facebook has long declared that it's "free and always will be." And it still is â€" unless you want more friends to see what you have to say.

The social media giant is testing a feature in the U.S. that lets users pay to promote their posts to friends, just as advertisers do. Facebook has been testing the service in New Zealand, where it tries out a lot of new features, and has gradually introduced it in more than 20 other countries.

Facebook said Wednesday that promoting a post â€" such as announcing a garage sale, charity drive or big news like an engagement â€" will bump it higher in your friends' news feeds.

"Every day, news feed delivers your posts to your friends. Sometimes a particular friend might not notice your post, especially if a lot of their friends have been posting recently and your story isn't near the top of their feed," Abhishek Doshi, a software engineer at Facebook, wrote on Facebook's news site.

Facebook didn't say how much it will cost to promote the posts, only that it's considering a range of prices as part of the test. On Wednesday, though, some users were told the cost would be $ 7 for each post that they wanted to promote.

Are you looking for a smartphone or a PDA phone? Smartphones usually means a windows device with a small screen and limited functionality, although many have keyboards, they aren't the best for multimedia. A PDA phone is usually a full featured PDA with a phone stuck inside. I'm a windows mobile phone addict, and it depends on what you're looking for though. Best battery like but a little pokey perfmance wise the HTC Wizard (Cingular 8125) is a great phone, albeit a tad large(I was averaging a little over a week between charges with about 4 hours use a week with bluetooth on all the time). The HTC TyTN (cingular 8525) is a little more svelt than the wizard, and has a small performace increase but with a pretty significant impact on battery life. Don't be confused with the 400mhz Samsung processor off the TyTN and the 200mhz Omap processor of the Wizard, the performance is only slightly better with the Samsung processor. The only smartphones I've tried are a motorola Q, and Samsung Blackjack. I wasn't particularly fond of either one and promptly sold them. I just picked up an HTC universal(actually a dopod 900) but it is a little big for my taste. The screen resolute and processor speed atracted me, but it's way too big for my taste, and is sitting in its box. My TyTN is on my hip right now and will probably stick with it for a few. For a smartphone it's a tossup between the Q and the Blackjack, but neither of them were to my liking. I didn't like the small screen, tiny keyboard, or the slow speed(not great to watch movies). For a PDA phone either the 8125 or 8525 are great. The 8125 is a little slower but with much better battery life. The 8525 is 3g(will be able to watch streaming movies), a little smaller, and the processor is a little peppier, it comes down to what is more important to you.

Question by : What does it mean to get a phone "upgrade" (in terms of plans and payments, stuff like that)? ok so i am looking to get a new phone and i am checking to see if i can get an "upgrade" what does it mean to be able to get a phone upgrade... does it mean i can buy the phone at a cheaper price or what Best answer for What does it mean to get a phone "upgrade" (in terms of plans and payments, stuff like that)?:

Answer by Lance
If you are eligable for an upgrade then you would pay the lower price for the phone with a 2 year contract. You need to call or go to your local cell phone carrier and ask them. It all depends on what you want. You can upgrade to any phone you want. It all depends if you want a free phone or pay a little bit more for a better one. Do you want a free upgrade? If so you'll get a basic phone. If you want to pay a little bit more you can get a Smartphone. It's all in what you want for a phone and how much you want to pay per month.

Answer by evilattorney
It means you have completed enough of your contract (18 to 20 months of a 2 year contract, usually) to get a new phone at the new customer price in return for signing a new 2 year contract.

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

The Federal Trade Commission is accusing six tech support operations of being nothing more than scams. The companies allegedly targeted consumers, claiming to be employees representing big tech companies, including Microsoft and Dell.

According to the FTC, the scam involves telemarketers calling computer owners and claiming they are infected with computer viruses. The computer owners are offered expensive anti-virus software, which is actually free. Finally, the telemarketers gain remote access to the computers in an effort to gather personal information on the owners.

As a result of the FTC action, a U.S. District Court judge ordered the tech support companies to halt their operations and froze their assets.

On the same day as the ruling, one CBS 5 viewer said she was contacted by a someone who claimed to be from Microsoft, offering anti-virus software for a price.

You can find the FTC press release here, along with an audio clip containing a conversation between an investigator and an alleged scammer.

The merger of T-Mobile and MetroPCS is foremost about an LTE network and all it enables, as well as positioning T-Mobile as a "value" carrier that can stand up to AT&T and Verizon.

Deutsche Telekom (DT) and MetroPCS, in the opening paragraph of an Oct. 3 statement announcing a "definitive agreement" to merge the small but notable prepaid carrier with DT's ailing American brand, T-Mobile, made three important assertions.

First, they said, the transaction will create a "clear-cut technology path to one common LTE network."

Long Term Evolution technology is critical to T-Mobile's ability to compete against the nation's top three carriers; is necessary for it to offer an Apple iPhone; and is the only network technology that it has in common with MetroPCS, as the latter's legacy network is based on Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) technology.

While T-Mobile has said it will begin offering LTE in early 2013, MetroPCS, which in Sept. 2010 jumped ahead of Verizon to offer the first commercial LTE deployment, completed its LTE rollout in March 2011. In August 2012, MetroPCS was the world's first carrier to offer voice-over LTE.

Second, the statement said that the new carrierâ€"which will operate under the T-Mobile nameâ€"will promote itself as the nation's "value carrier," suggesting the further inroads it plans to make into the prepaid market, where both carriers have experience. Combined, they'll control 23 percent of the prepaid market from the start.

And third, the deal will provide T-Mobile with what it has neededâ€"scale, spectrum and financial resourcesâ€"to "aggressively compete with the other national U.S. wireless carriers."

"T-Mobile USA has made it clear the deal is all about LTE, with the combined spectrum assets of the companies providing a path to 2 x 20MHz for LTE in many markets, double T-Mobile's current plans for 2 x 10MHz for LTE," Mike Roberts, a principal analyst with Informa Telecoms & Media, said in an Oct. 3 research note.

T-Mobile CEO John Legere, having an exciting first few days on the job, said the deal will accelerate T-Mobile's 4G strategy.

"Our enhanced spectrum position will be the foundation for a faster and more reliable network and will allow us to deploy a deeper and more robust LTE rollout, particularly in major metropolitan areas," Legere said in the statement. "We will be a stronger, value-focused competitor, providing customers with offerings such as our Unlimited Nationwide 4G Data and 'bring your own device' plans."

Regarding the non-LTE network incompatibilities, MetroPCS plans to migrate customers to a common LTE network when they upgrade their phones. While this should ease the burden a bit, it will far from eliminate it, says Informa's Roberts.

In addition to now having to migrate two major technology families to LTE, at the same time T-Mobile "will have to refarm (transition) its combined spectrum holdings from CDMA and WCDMA to LTE. This all adds up to a hugely complex and challenging migration that will take significant time and investment," said Roberts, "and which is a major risk for derailing the benefits of the deal, which the companies say includes $ 6 billion to $ 7 billion in expected cost savings."

In their joint statement, the companies also said that they plan to offer a wider selection of competitively priced plans, including contract, no-contract, SIM-only, pay-as-you-go and mobile broadband services.

After the closing, the new T-Mobile's headquarters will be in Bellevue, Wash.â€"where T-Mobile is currently locatedâ€"but retain a "significant presence" in MetroPCS' hometown of Dallas, Texas.

Legere will be CEO and president of the new company, and the chief financial officer will be J. Braxton Carter, currently CFO of MetroPCS.

"The company will operate T-Mobile and MetroPCS as separate customer units," it added, "led by Jim Alling, currently chief operating officer of T-Mobile, and Thomas Keys, currently president and COO of MetroPCS, respectively."

The carriers expect the transaction to close during the first half of 2013.

Question by Jim Bo: How does phone "data" work for verizon? I got a new phone for xmas and my mom says it has 2 gigs of data, what does that mean and how much txt, calling, and internet does that let me have? Best answer for How does phone "data" work for verizon?:

Answer by evilattorney
Data is internet access which is separate from calling and texting. If the phone plan was recently purchased, you have 4gb not 2. Call 611 and check. Verizon has a data calculator on its website. Find it and play with it. It will show you the amounts of data that various things use.
