Consumer advocates can't muster much enthusiasm for the upcoming merger of T-Mobile and MetroPCS, but they don't seem to be against it.
"We hate to see companies like MetroPCS shut down, but in this situation, we can see how this merger can add to the overall competitiveness of the field," said Bartees Cox, communications associate at Public Knowledge. "With AT&T and Verizon getting so strong, this would be a good way to compete against them [and] we're hoping it will eventually lower prices for consumers."
Cox made it clear he would oppose a deal between T-Mobile and Sprint, though.
"We like to see four [wireless providers.] Four is great for competition," he said.
Matt Wood, policy director at Free Press, was practically dismissive of the deal as being beneath his notice.
"We need stronger competitors to push back against the AT&T-Verizon juggernaut, ones that will force these carriers to compete on price and service quality. But consolidation at the bottom between a regional prepaid carrier and the last-place national carrier is not going to fix all of the problems in our wireless market," he said in a statement.
Consumer Reports was also lukewarm, tending towards positive.
"The merger with MetroPCS should give an expanded T-Mobile a better shot at remaining competitive with other telecom titans in coverage and more. ⦠[But] neither carrier is particularly satisfying to most readers," the organization said.
The Rural Telecommunications Group, an array of tiny rural wireless carriers that generally opposes big-carrier mergers, was much more positive. Remember, these guys are competing with T-Mobile - but they're competing with AT&T more.
"T-Mobile and MetroPCS will be able to provide a competitive, and hopefully long-lasting, alternative to the Twin Bells of AT&T and Verizon," RTG general counsel Carri Bennet said in a statement. "Having a healthy, vibrant fourth LTE competitor is critical to preserving competition in the mobile wireless market. A post-merger T-Mobile truly committed to being a value-leader benefits all consumers."
AT&T, Verizon and Sprint have all declined to comment on what they think of this merger.
The merger between T-Mobile and MetroPCS will have to go through the same government scrutiny as the AT&T/T-Mobile merger did, but the other merger was energetically opposed by pretty much the entire consumer advocate community, including myself. With a lack of significant opposition on competitive grounds, it looks like this merger is much more likely to go through.

The Optimus G is part of a packed lineup at AT&T. In its announcement today, however, the carrier provided no pricing or availability information.

LG's Optimus G.
(Credit: LG )AT&T said today that it plans to sell LG's flagship Optimus G super smartphone, adding to an already crowded lineup of mobile devices.
The Optimus G is the first phone to run Qualcomm's quad-core Snapdragon processor, allowing it to handle complex tasks such as pinch-to-zooming a high-definition video clip as its running, or working in a second application with video playing in the background.
AT&T didn't provide information on pricing or availability.

Along with a 1.5 gigahertz quad-core Snapdragon processor, the Optimus G is packed with 2 gigabytes of RAM, 32GB of storage, which can be expanded to 80GB with a micro SD card, and a 2,100 mAh Li-Polymer battery. It also has an 8-megapixel camera with no shutter lag, and the ability to capture live shots from video. The phone has a 4.7-inch True HD IPS Plus display. Like all of AT&T's other high-end phones, it can connect to AT&T's 4G LTE network.
LG has previously said that the Optimus G would sell in the U.S. in the fourth quarter. It's unclear whether AT&T is the only U.S. carrier that will offer the device.
LG has struggled to make a mark in the U.S. with its smartphones, and the Optimus G has a rough road ahead of it. While the phone's specifications are impressive, it will debut alongside a wave of new smartphones just at AT&T alone. In fact, the carrier has been unveiling a series of phones since Friday, including devices from Samsung Electronics and Sony.
LG has already promised to give it a strong push, but it remains to be seen how much support AT&T will provide, considering it has to juggle marketing for a number of different products, including Apple's iPhone 5.
One bright spot is AT&T's decision to allow LG to keep the Optimus name intact. LG has attempted emulate rival Samsung in its bid to build a smartphone brand like Galaxy, but has been thwarted in the U.S., where many of its phones have their names changed. That has hurt LG's ability to create a consistent name for itself.
Perhaps that changes with the Optimus G.

The woman behind a scareware con that tricked more than a million people into paying money to "fix" nonexistent problems with their computers has been fined $ 163 million by the Federal Trade Commission.
Kristy Ross was also permanently banned from selling security software or any other form of software that interferes with peopleâs PCs.
The case dates to 2008, when an elaborate scam used online ads to display a fake system-scan alert that claimed to find malware on usersâ computers. The victims were then urged to buy software to fix the problem, costing between $ 40 and $ 60 each time, in order to clean up their PCs.
The FTC said that more than one million people were conned into buying the fake clean-up software with names such as WinFixer, WinAntivirus, DriveCleaner, ErrorSafe, and XP Antivirus.
The scareware con ran between 2000 and 2008, and the FTC estimated that Innovative Marketing, the company that promoted the fake software, took in more than $ 60 million in revenue over the years. The FTC investigation was prompted by some 3,000 complaints received over the scam.
A total of seven people faced charges in the FTC investigation, with two ordered to pay back $ 8.2 million in ill-gotten gains. Two people settled their cases and default judgments were made against the three other defendants.
However, the FTC's action on Tuesday regarding Ross brought in the biggest judgment in the case, $ 163 million. Ross also was banned from any form of deceptive marketing.
