BLACKBERRY MAKER Research in Motion (RIM) has impressed investors with its fiscal second quarter earnings, despite posting a £235m loss.
Announced on Thursday, RIM's quarterly earnings saw the firm's shares leap by 18 percent, even though the company posted its lowest smartphone shipments since 2008. It announced that it shifted 7.4 million smartphones during the quarter as well as 130,000 Playbook tablets, probably thanks to retailers' discounts.
While these were RIM's lowest sales figures for a while, they were above what analysts had been expecting.
RIM reported a net loss of $ 235m (around £145m), compared with a profit of $ 329m for the same quarter last year. However, RIM increased its cash reserve to to around £2.3bn, up from $ 2.2bn in the first quarter.
Thorsten Heins, president and CEO of RIM, understandably seemed pleased by the results. "Despite the significant changes we are implementing across the organization, our second quarter results demonstrate that RIM is progressing on its financial and operational commitments during this major transition," said Heins.
"Subscribers grew to approximately 80 million global users, revenue grew sequentially from the first quarter, cash, cash equivalents, short-term and longterm investments increased by approximately $ 100 million to $ 2.3 billion, and carriers and developers are responding well to previews of our upcoming BlackBerry 10 platform.
"Make no mistake about it, we understand that we have much more work to do, but we are making the organizational changes to drive improvements across the company, our employees are committed and motivated, and BlackBerry 10 is on track to launch in the first calendar quarter of 2013."
Heins also revealed that the company will be bringing mid-range and top-end Blackberry 10 devices to market by next Autumn, with low-end devices coming later in the year. µ

i would rather say "prÄjiturÄ cu mÄr româneascÄ" or even better "prÄjiturÄ cu mere româneascÄ" to convince for it, you can google it prajitura de mar ...no page prajitura cu mar...5 pages prajitura cu mere...10 pages Ä is pronounced like first "a" in arise, alight, arrive pra-gee-tu-ra kjuu me-re ro-man-easka romanian apple cake shop will be then magazin cu prÄjituri cu mere româneÅti or cofetÄrie cu prÄjituri cu mere româneÅti ko-fe-tar-ie kjuu pra-gee-turi kjuu me-re ro-man-esh-ti ie like in siege Å is pronounced sh like in share, shave though i don't like much the presence of two "cu", "cu" means "with", so maybe somebody will find even a better translation. The english has the advantage of compressing expressions so that you can exprimate one thing with less words. But still it makes sense and is correct my translation.

Question by RameelRaymundo: would calling a body shop "criminals" to the dealership that refers ppl to them be construed as defamation? I work in the insurance industry and I went to get my car serviced at a dealership that happens to refer their customers to a body shop that charges exorbitant prices. I slipped and called the body shop "criminals" for constantly having high repair costs to insurance companies. Could this be construed as defamation? Best answer for would calling a body shop "criminals" to the dealership that refers ppl to them be construed as defamation?:
Answer by Anabelle
Do you really think they want a lawsuit like that in the newspapers, and if they threaten you make sure they know that is what will happen. Just tell them you will never come near them again if they are bothering you, and if they threaten, you know what to tell them.
Answer by Caoedhen
It would depend on the exact situation, but probably not. Any defamation claim has two prongs that have to be satisfied to be successful. 1. The statement has to be untrue. An opinion is OK usually, but the word criminal has certain negative connotations. If the body shop is not technically doing anything but gouging prices and has not been convicted of anything, then the statement is not true. You lose on that one. 2. The statement has to be "published", (made to a 3rd party), AND the claimant has to have suffered some loss because of the statement. You telling the owner that what he does is criminal is NOT defamation. Telling another customer in the shop the same thing, who then leaves without geting the work done, has caused an economic loss to the shop. So *if* there were other persons in the area and *if* the business lost money due to your statement, then the second prong is staisfied and you could be sued. Most people that scream about suing someone for defamation/slander/libel have no idea what they are talking about...

As the social network sweeps clean all bogus activity, page fan counts drop by the tens of thousands.

Metric data on Facebook's top pages by fan counts and their daily growth.
(Credit: PageData)The purge has commenced. Facebook is throwing out all fake users, accounts, and likes. That's right, all of those thousands of questionable thumbs ups are starting to disappear.
The social network announced last month that it'd start this massive deletion process, but it was unclear when. According to TechCrunch, Facebook confirmed today that the time is now.
Over the course of the day, tens of thousands of fans were quietly dropped from Facebook Pages. Data from Facebook metrics site PageData shows that Zynga's Texas HoldEm Poker lost 96,000 fans today, while Rihanna lost 22,198, and Michael Jackson lost 17,591. Even the Facebook like champion Eminem had fans vanish today -- his count dropped by 15,420.
Facebook said last month that the reason it was sweeping its site of phony activity was to cut down on suspicious likes and make sure that users were dealing with real people and businesses.
Here's more from a blog post in August:
These newly improved automated efforts will remove those Likes gained by malware, compromised accounts, deceived users, or purchased bulk Likes. While we have always had dedicated protections against each of these threats on Facebook, these improved systems have been specifically configured to identify and take action against suspicious Likes.

Banksy's Exit Through The Gift Shop |Website: www.banksyfilm.com This is the inside story of Street Art - a brutal and revealing account of what happens when fame, money and vandalism collide. Exit Through the Gift Shop follows an eccentric shop-keeper turned amateur film-maker as he attempts to capture many of the world's most infamous vandals on camera, only to have a British stencil artist named Banksy turn the camcorder back on its owner with wildly unexpected results. One of the most provocative films about art ever made, Exit Through the Gift Shop is a fascinating study of low-level criminality, comradeship and incompetence. By turns shocking, hilarious and absurd, this is an enthralling modern-day fairytale... with bolt cutters.

In just six months, Instagram use has more than septupled, growing from around 900,000 people per day to around 7.3 million, according to ComScore. The photo-sharing appâs astonishing growth underscores the growing momentum of mobile-native apps, and the potential of said apps to open wide leads over traditional websites.
Instagram effectively has no website; though the social networkâs photos live on the web, it can only be driven through mobile app. Like the popular check-in service Foursquare, Instagram is truly native to mobile and specifically to smartphones. Even before evidence of Instagramâs amazing six-month growth spurt, Silicon Valley entrepreneurs and venture capitalists were becoming obsessed with the mobile frontier and with the potential of mobile-first development. Much as bricks-and-mortar companies raced to develop web strategies in the mid 1990s, todayâs web properties, including relative newcomers like Facebook, are racing to draw up aggressive attack plans for mobile.

Instagram now claims more U.S. daily users than Twitter, across both apps and web. Source: ComScore
Even Twitter, whose roots are in mobile phones, is being eclipsed by mobile-native Instagram. Comscore says that in the U.S., Instagramâs 7.3 million daily web and app users in August surpassed Twitterâs 6.9 million daily web and app users, the first time thatâs happened (see chart). As Mike Isaac of All Things D wroteof the switch, âthe massive shift in user traffic to mobile devices is a real thing.â
Twitter was for several years a web, rather than smartphone, focused company; though it was built on top of text messaging, the microblogging service quickly turned its attention to its site and didnât release its first smartphone app until 2010, four years after Twitter started. In fairness, Twitterâs smartphone app still predated Instagramâs birth, and Twitter for years nurtured an ecosystem of third-party apps. But it was never such a mobile purebred as Instagram.
Of course, many previous mobile apps have surged like Instagram only to fizzle out. But people seem to genuinely enjoy looking at friendsâ pictures on Instagram, and uploading snapshots of their own. The average visitor spent a total of four hours on the site during the month of August, compared to less than three hours for the average Twitter visitor, ComScore says.
That kind of engagement is only going to stoke Silicon Valleyâs hunger for mobile-native social networks. If you think the hype around Appleâs iPhone launches is excessive, brace yourself: The collective din of Instagramâs would-be peers promoting their disruptive potential is probably going to render you⦠well, the opposite of mobile.
