The new Apple Maps application shown on an iPad.
Who knew a map app could trigger so much brouhaha?
Apple removed the popular Google Maps from its iOS 6 mobile operating system released earlier this month and substituted its own map app. Apple's Maps, while containing some gee-whiz features such as voice-guided navigation and a 3-D Flyover feature, has been panned widely for its woefully incomplete maps and missing information.
On Friday, Apple CEO Tim Cook issued a public apology for the flaws. "We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better," he said in a letter to customers posted on Apple's web site.
The amount of backlash attests to the importance of a dependable map app in a smartphone, a mobile device whose value depends on its ability to get things done while its owners are on the move. Google confirmed that it is working on a replacement for its iPhone app, and advises iPhone users in the meantime to use the browser to access its maps. One touch easily adds maps.google.com on the phone screen, and it works well enough, though it lacks voice navigation.

And other map developers -- who have long felt ignored by the virtual duopoly of Apple and Google -- now see a tiny crack in which they can try to win a bit of mindshare from disillusioned-by-Apple Maps fans willing to try something new.
"This market has gotten crowded recently. There are sort of these openings that come up," says Vijay Bangaru, vice president of product for Mapquest.
In his note to customers, Cook even suggested that customers turn to alternative maps service -- including Google, Bing, Waze and Mapquest.
Here is a look at some other phone map apps that include voice-guided navigation:
--Waze. It's a more-or-less-3-D map that stands out from the pack with comprehensive data submitted by users. With 25 million members worldwide, its crowd-generated information includes real-time traffic updates, accidents, police traps, estimates of commuting hours and even gas station locations -- all pointed out with cartoony icons that can be somewhat distracting.
Tapping into the phone's sensor, Waze knows when and how fast you're driving, in itself a source of data that gets sent back to Waze for its traffic algorithm. While the car is moving, Waze also turns off the typing capability, but users can contribute traffic information by waving a hand over the phone and speaking to the app.
--Mapquest. The AOL-owned service has lost some luster through the years with the emergence of Google Maps. But it has been enhancing mobile features to win back customers, including adding voice navigation in 2010 and integrating more local points of interest directly on the map so users don't have flip to other guide apps such as Yelp.
Because turn-by-turn direction often can be confusing to follow without visible, distinct street signs, Mapquest has also added some context information. For example, it may instruct drivers to "turn right on Arapahoe street, near Safeway," says Bangaru.
--Skobbler. Using open-sourced map data called OpenStreetMap with 750,000 users contributing information, Skobbler sells a 99-cent app that appeals more to walkers, hikers and bikers, says co-founder Marcus Thielking.
Google Maps and other driver-oriented maps have tweaked and incorporated data that are relevant to drivers, such as road surface types, crossings, one-way streets and ramps. OpenStreetMap, which works like Wikipedia, is often missing such information, Thielking says.

Question by JeffXM: What is, "The Phone" people keep trying to tell me things? Like random people in the public put their fingers in their ears and say, "Your on the phone" "Get off the phone". I'm not on a actual phone and I'm not talking out load. I know it sounds crazy but I think it has to do with something like "telepathy". Something on a psychological level. A neighbor said, "The reason why we know everything about you is because your on the phone, your so dumb dude, get off the phone". Can someone please explain what "The Phone" is and what all this means? Best answer for What is, "The Phone" people keep trying to tell me things?:

In the context you describe, it seems that they are saying that you are not concentrating on what they are saying. They perceive that you are not giving them your full attention.

(Reuters) - Research In Motion Ltd, after buying itself breathing room on Thursday by delivering stronger-than-expected quarterly results, still faces the formidable task of delivering a make-or-break line of new BlackBerry devices early next year.
The more stable cash position that RIM achieved during its fiscal quarter ended September 1 will give the company a fighting chance to market the new BlackBerry 10 effectively while ramping up full production of the revamped line, analysts said.
Until Thursday's results, RIM was being written off by analysts because of its failure to keep pace with innovations from rivals such as Apple Inc and Samsung Electronics Co.
Investors responded to the rare glimmer of good news for the embattled company by pushing up RIM's downtrodden share price by more than 12 percent on Friday morning.
"I have to admit they did a very good job making the best out of a really tough situation. You've got to give management some credit for that, but they still need to nurse the company back to health," said Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu.
The company is counting on BB10 to arrest a precipitous decline in market share over the past year and longer.
But in the end, the success or failure of the BB10 will hinge by how warmly it's embraced by consumers, many of whom have already switched to Apple's iPhone and Samsung's Galaxy, especially in North America and Europe.
Test versions of the BB10 have won praise from carriers and developers, but the true test still hinges on RIM's ability to win back market share and the hearts of an ever growing base of touchscreen users.
Even though RIM's aging line-up has lost ground in North America and Europe, the BlackBerry maker managed to top shipment and revenue expectations in its second quarter, thanks largely to strong sales of smartphones in emerging markets such as India and Indonesia.
"This performance is nothing short of shocking as RIM has found a formula to entice its global carrier customers to sell (its) product," said National Bank Financial's Kris Thompson.
On Friday National Bank Financial upgraded RIM's stock, while BMO Capital Markets and Barclays Capital were among brokerages that raised price targets on the company's shares.
Thompson, who is rated five stars by Thomson Reuters StarMine for the accuracy of his estimates on RIM's earnings, upgraded the stock to "outperform" and increased his price target on the stock to $ 12 from $ 8.
Shares of RIM, which rose 20 percent after the closing bell on Thursday, opened 12.8 percent higher at $ 8.04 on the Nasdaq on Friday. Its Toronto-listed shares rose 14 percent to C$ 7.92.

The Galaxy Note 2 is the next jumbo phone from Samsung, which has pushed to expand the smartphone category into a hybrid category many refer to as "phablet." The screen is even bigger than the original.
The Galaxy Tab 10.1 2 marks another attempt by Samsung to establish a foothold in the tablet business. While the business is dominated by Apple and iPad, Samsung has been aggressive in offering different variations of the tablet. The Tab line is seen as a lower-cost alternative to the higher end Galaxy Note 10.1, which comes with a stylus.
Newly announced are the Galaxy Express and Galaxy Rugby Pro. The Galaxy Express appears to be a mass-market smartphone. It has a 4G LTE connection, 4.5-inch Super Amoled Plus display, 1.5 gigaherz dual-core processor, 2,000 mAh battery, and 5-megapixel rear-facing camera. The phone will run on Android 4.0, known as Ice Cream Sandwich.
The Rugby Pro is a rugged smartphone that is built to military specifications, allowing it to withstand water, shock, and dust. It has a 4-inch WVGA Super Amoled display and a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera with 720p HD video recording capability. The phone will also have corporate e-mail support and access to a walkie-talkie-like push-to-talk feature.
