Summary: Deutsche Telekom is in talks to merge T-Mobile USA with MetroPCS, but would this merger really help anyone?

Deutsche Telekom is in talks to buy MetroPCS and merge it with the German telecommuncations company's U.S. arm, T-Mobile USA.

MetroPCS issued the following statement on Tuesday:

MetroPCS today confirmed that it is in discussions with Deutsche Telekom regarding an agreement to combine T-Mobile USA and MetroPCS. There can be no assurances that any transaction will result from these discussions, and the Company does not intend to comment further unless and until an agreement is reached.

According to Bloomberg, Deutsche Telekom wants to be able to scale out T-Mobile so it can better compete with Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile's previous bidder, AT&T.

T-Mobile is currently the nation's fourth largest wireless provider behind Verizon, AT&T and Sprint. MetroPCS comes in fifth.

However, it's questionable how much such a merger would benefit anyone. From one perspective, T-Mobile would have a slightly extended reach nationwide with a new arm of no-contract mobile customers with the potential of also reaching smaller markets.

The no-contract consumer base could be a useful strategy for T-Mobile in positioning itself as a stronger alternative to the top three wireless providers.

Still, instead of feeling like a win-win situation, it just feels like a temporary band-aid for two flailing nationwide carriers.

Question by SingleLatinMan29: My 2002 Mercedez c240 displays a "break lining wear see shop" warning on the dash. What does that mean? Is the break lining different from the breaks? Do I have to replace them both? Is the car damaged? Thanks people. Best answer for My 2002 Mercedez c240 displays a "break lining wear see shop" warning on the dash. What does that mean?:

Answer by oklatom
It means your brake pads have worn to the point that you need to replace them. "Brakes" generally refers to the whole system, from the pedal to the master cylinder on including the lines. Lining refers to the pads. Take it in.

Question by Luke: Cosmopolitan had a survey that said "89% of men talk about sex at the barber shop!" What do you think of that? Personally, I find it a little ridiculous but would LOVE to hear what you have to say! Am I crazy in doubting Cosmo's un-ending fountain of wisdom or do I have a legit belief? Best answer for Cosmopolitan had a survey that said "89% of men talk about sex at the barber shop!" What do you think of that?:

Answer by Robert E
I think 89% is freaking ridiculous. There is no way in hell that many guys talk about sex while getting a hair cut. I have never heard a sexual conversation take place in a barber shop and I got my haircut every week while I was in the Marine Corps and that was on base! I figured if any barber shop would be filled with sex talk it would be a barber shop on a military base!

Answer by Jane
As usual I think Cosmo's full of shite.

Answer by Capricorn Dancer b.u
LOL cosmo is my moral compass.

Answer by tony hammonder
These survey stats are a load of tosh - absolute rubbish and that marine fellow would know if it were anything like true. When I started out life in short trousers just after the war, I attended barber shops as there was no alternative. The bad tempered old barbers had no conversation with a mere lolly pop kid other than to exort the need to sit still - not something that comes natural ly to an energetic school boy of the times. Later on and when I was a young man, the barbers had nothing to say other than to discuss last nights big fight - Jo Bugner or some other such yawn fighter. Nowadays, most barbers are girls and last thing they want to do is to discuss sex with an old buffer such as myself so somehow I seem to have missed out all the way down the line. If you go to America, you will find sex in action in the barber shop - new franchises such as knockouts whereby all the so called barber assistants are attired in boxing shorts - have a look on the web and you will see it for yourself. Not really my cup of tea but marginally better than old Jo Bugner, I reckon, who was renowned for being a big yawn in the ring. He had a good defence but did not believe in throwing too many punches!

Samsung's still number one in U.S. market share, but according to ComScore, number-three Apple narrowed the gap in August.

While Samsung remains at the top of the U.S. smartphone market-share rankings, Apple is rapidly catching up to its staunch rival, the latest ComScore figures show.

The figures for the August 2012 report, collected from more than 30,000 U.S. mobile subscribers, show that Samsung's share remains flat, compared with a significant growth for Apple. Interestingly, the figures close before the iPhone 5 was released -- let alone announced -- showing an increase in iPhone uptake ahead of the expected next-generation Apple smartphone.

Apple's smartphone share grew 2.1 percent -- the highest increase in mobile subscribers seen since April -- edging closer to second-place smartphone maker LG, which dropped by nearly 1 percent in the three-month average period ending in August.

In the race for the top two podium spaces, it's clear that by ComScore's next monthly report, Apple could rise to second place, ready and braced to take on the rival Android maker at the top of the rankings.

Though HTC grew by 0.2 percent in the August report, the Taiwanese company continues to struggle with poor smartphone sales and sinking revenue. During its second-quarter earnings report in July, HTC fessed up to a 57 percent decline in net profit year-over-year.

Meanwhile, Google-owned Motorola Mobility dipped by 0.8 percent, currently standing at 11.2 percent of the U.S. smartphone market share.

On platform market share, only Apple and Google managed to secure an increase in subscribers, while the other platform makers saw a decline.

The Android operating system increased marginally by 1.7 percent to 52.6 percent in total. Google, which develops the mobile operating system, said last month that there are more than 1.3 million Android activations per day, an increase from 1 million per day in June. In total, this represents more than a half-billion Android devices activated in total since the mobile software was first launched.

Apple, however, stormed ahead with its iOS software with an increase of 2.4 percent to 34.3 percent.

On the other hand, BlackBerry maker Research In Motion saw the greatest loss with 3.1 percent in the platform space. The ailing smartphone maker has seen consistent losses through the year but has now dropped below the 10 percent mark to single figures in share.

Microsoft's Windows Phone and Nokia's Symbian operating systems declined by 0.4 percent each, representing bittersweet news for the Finnish phone maker.

Symbian's decline comes as a blessing for Nokia as it continues to plug the Windows Phone platform through its "special relationship" with Microsoft. But for Microsoft, the ComScore numbers represent a continued headache as the software giant seeks to drum up support for its mobile platform -- only weeks away from an expected Windows Phone 8 launch -- but falls below the radar while the major players in the platform race remain more than visible.

Well over a month ago, Motorola filed a bunch of patent infringement claims against Apple with the International Trade Commission (ITC), and wanted an import ban on virtually all Apple products including Macs, iPhones and iPads. However, Motorola has withdrawn the lawsuit entirely without an explanation. The company says that no agreement has been reached with Apple, so we’re left scratching our heads.

At this point, we can only speculate as to why Motorola dropped the lawsuit without any settlement from either side. Usually, a withdrawal like this would indicate that the Motorola and Apple have reached some kind of settlement, but that doesn’t seem to be the case here, so now we’re only left wondering what’s going on in Motorola’s head.

It’s possible that Motorola felt that they no longer thought the lawsuit was strong enough to beat Apple, and FOSS Patent’s Florian Mueller also speculates that Motorola’s issues with tracking down copies of all the needed certified documents had something to do with it. Either reasons are certainly realistic.

Apple and Motorola are currently engaged in various lawsuits against each other, including another lawsuit that Motorola filed against Apple with the ITC in 2010. That one is still active, and while an administrative law judge ruled it invalid, the ITC disagreed, so the case was sent back to the judge, and he wrote in a filing yesterday that he is targeting an April 2013 finish date for the lawsuit.
