Gadget Mania

We’ve all had it happen to us before: we’re browsing the web when we’re greeted with a pop-up alert claiming that our computer is infected and that our immediate action is required. Most tech savvy people wouldn’t be tricked into falling for that, but for a while, these scams had many computer users legitimately scared. A handful of people involved in one of these scareware scams have been ordered by a US District Court to pay out a whopping $ 163 million FTC fine today, after it was discovered that they scammed more than 1 million people out of money.

Those people, Kristy Ross, Sam Jain, and Daniel Sundin, were hit with the $ 163 million fine to repay the victims they ripped off throughout the years. In addition, Ross has been banned from selling software that interferes with a user’s computer. Ross and co. were responsible for one of these seemingly endless scareware schemes, alerting Internet-goers to non-existent problems on their computers, and then charging $ 39.95 and up to “fix” the issues. The scam ran from 2000 to 2008, and in that time, the trio pulled in tens of millions of dollars from confused and scared PC users.

Three other people involved in the case, Marc D’Souza, Maurice D’Souza, and James Reno, settled with the FTC in 2010, and aren’t required to pay back the $ 168 million. The group operated under the name of Innovative Marketing Inc., which bought space for legitimate-looking ads on major websites. When users would click on the ads, they would be taken to an Innovative Marketing website, where they were told that any number of malicious programs were discovered on their computer and then urged to purchase bogus software to fix the issues.

This is a big step in the right direction for the FTC, but unfortunately, scareware still runs rampant today. It’s a problem that probably won’t ever go away entirely, so users need to stay vigilant when it comes to surfing the Internet and believing those illegitimate alerts. This may not be the last we’ve heard of scareware, but it’s definitely the last we’ve heard of Innovative Marketing Inc.

Question by Jeffrey Rolek: Is "Dr. Claw's Dump N' Pump" for Sega Genesis Real? I saw the "Angry Video Game Nerd" doing a review of "Kid Kool" for NES. At the end he mentioned other game with worse control. And one of them is a Sega Genesis game called "Dr Claw's Dump N' Pump". It features Dr. Claw form "Inspector Gadget" plunging a toilet on the cover of the cartridge. I noticed Sega's official seal of approval on it. But I can't seem to find any videos/images of gameplay anywhere on the Internet. Is this game really real or is it nothing but a practical joke to fool the audience? I hope that it's real so we can see it on the Nerd's future episodes! Best answer for Is "Dr. Claw's Dump N' Pump" for Sega Genesis Real?:

Answer by John
Nope, just Chuck Testa.

Answer by cobrajet
It was a joke. The game is not real.

viewdle

Google, according to a report by Forbes, has acquired Viewdle, an augmented reality and facial recognition startup. Forbes says the price was likely around $ 30 million, but we are still trying to confirm both the acquisition and the price. The Viewdle board, the Forbes report says, approved the acquisition last week and the company plans to tell its employees about it tomorrow afternoon.

Update: Viewdle just returned our email: “We do not have any comment.” Google has not yet responded to our emails. Google also just responded with a comment that it doesn’t comment on rumors and speculation.

Update 2 (3pm PT): We have learned a few more things about the company since we first posted this story. We’ve updated parts of this post to reflect this.

The company was founded in the Ukraine in 2006 and is currently headquartered in Silicon Valley with operations across Europe and South America, including, of course, Ukraine. Viewdle, which won the 2008 LeWeb startup competition, previously received funding from numerous venture firms, including KCP Capital, Anthem Venture Partners, Best Buy Capital, Blackberry and Qualcomm. The company, we hear, raised about $ 250,000 to $ 500,000 from an angel investor. Anthem Venture Partners then invested about $ 2 million in a Series A round in 2008 and Qualcomm, Best Buy and Blackberry invested in a $ 10 million Series B round in 2010. The founders’ equity in the company, a source close to Viewdle tells us, was heavily diluted in the process and the entrepreneurial team will likely see very little of the purchase price.

We’ve also learned that this is the second time Viewdle is in acquisition talks with Google. The two companies first talked in 2008. In 2011, Motorola was also interested in acquiring the company, but the acquisition fell through after Google acquired Motorola.

Its apps, including SocialCamera and games like ThirdEye, are currently all available on Android, though the company is also currently testing an iOS version of its Face Recognition SDK. Viewdle also owns a number of patents related to facial recognition. While Viewdle’s technology has always been impressive, it looks like the company’s business never took off.

Google previously bought at least two similar startups in the past. In July 2011, the company acquired the Pittsburgh-based facial recognition company PittPatt and all the way back in 2006, it bought the Germany biometrics company Neven Vision.

There is clearly a lot of interested in facial recognition startups right now. Face.com, for example, recently acquired Face.com for just under $ 60 million (though some of that was in Facebook stock, which is likely worth less now). Still, as Facebook’s recent run-in with German privacy advocates shows, facial recognition is still a rather sensitive subject.

Viewdle (www.viewdle.com) is the only independent mobile-focused visual analysis company. Viewdle enables the camera to inspire new social experiences and effortless communication. Viewdle is creating new user experiences in mobile gaming, social networking, social media, advertising and marketing, with the introduction of computer vision and recognition technologies to consumer products. Its best-of-breed recognition technology has been developed by its global research and development team, which includes nine PhDs. Available Viewdle products (http://viewdle.com/products/index.html): SocialCamera, a face recognition-based photo-socializing product for...
