The new Kindle Paperwhite isnât the perfect character. Just like the literary creations that live and die on its screen, it has flaws. Itâs wise, though it still suffers from memories of its past. But in the great e-reader saga, itâs clearly the protagonist, and one worth rooting for.
The Paperwhiteâs screen is brilliant in the literal sense of the word, as it glows. The new Kindle isnât the first e-reader with a screen that lights up: Barnes & Noble beat Amazon to the punch by five months with its Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight. But the light-up screen on the new Kindle surpasses the one on the Nook because it solves most (but not all) of the light uniformity issues evident on the earlier device.
Granted, illuminating an e-ink screen is difficult. The most common solution is to use a nano-printed âlight guideâ â" the LEDs sit at the bottom of the device, and a thin plastic screen with tiny patterns etched into it carries the light toward the middle and top of the display. The scores gradually disperse the beams, allowing more light to permeate to the top as the nano guides get further form the light source. This creates an even distribution of soft light, and the whole screen gently glows. Itâs much less fatiguing than a back-lit screen (like a tablet) and is more comfortable during late-night reading sessions.
But, like the Nook, the light source creates a problem: blossoms of LED light appear at the bottom of the screen. Itâs fainter than the light-source bleed found on the Nook, but itâs still there. Itâs only annoying at the bottom of the screen, but it breaks up the flow of an otherwise flawless screen.
Fortunately, the attention Amazon has paid to the rest of the screen makes up for these lighting hiccups. Text on the Kindle Paperwhite is darker and crisper than what Iâve seen on previous-generation Kindles. Also, the background color of the screen is lighter than previous Kindles. Itâs less âcardboardâ and more âcoffee with too much milk.â
Amazon says the Paperwhite has 25 percent more contrast. Without busting out the contrast spectrometer to test Amazonâs claim, Iâm going to go with what I can see, and when compared to my last-gen Kindle, itâs clear Amazon has indeed increased the contrast of the screen.

But this isnât just a screen you look at; itâs one you touch. Amazon has added a finish to the capacitive screen that feels like the paper stock used in high-end hardcover books. Itâs a small detail, and if it were absent, it wouldnât detract from the e-reader. But, itâs a nice touch (cough) that gives the screen a tactile feel not found on other e-readers.
One thing I wouldâve liked to have seen on the Paperwhite: physical page-turn buttons. Touchscreens are great and all, but when you end up losing your place in a book, all the touchy-swipey technology in the world canât sway my belief that sometimes, a physical button is better.
Even without buttons, the physical execution of the Paperwhite puts it ahead of the competition. Itâs light, eminently pocketable, and presents the best electronic reading experience. So the fact that Amazon raised the bar with updates to the Kindleâs software feature set is just gravy on the cake.

You're F-ed, to be blunt. They are not a registered business so you can't go through the BBB or local Chamber of Commerce. Your best bet is to not make a silly mistake like that again.

Question by KristenCO: Where can an adult take a "wood shop" class? I would like to start learning how to work with wood, work with power tools, etc. I never had the luxury of taking "Wood Shop" in high school - what are my options as an adult? (I live in Colorado, if that helps.) Best answer for Where can an adult take a "wood shop" class?:

Many community colleges and community centers host arts and craft classes at a number of "skill levels." Try contacting the nearest community college to you to find out if they have any classes for beginning wood working. If not, your community center should send out quarterly news letters that may show a selection of classes available there, or a number to contact them on possible, upcoming classes.

You could try http://www.meetup.com and find someone, a wood worker with tools and opinions who might trade you practical lessons for materials or just your good company. Also Home Depot gives classes in building and craft centers give classes in wood crafting. Also, our senior center isn't just for seniors. There are all sorts of classes to take from yoga to wood carving to whatever.....taught by people in the field at $ 5 an hour lesson, bring your own stuff.

Considering there are not many vocational schools open this time of the year for classes, you might check with your local high school shop class and see if the instructor would be willing to have a summer class or teach you over the summer. In the fall or winter evening class sessions there might be some adult ed classes at the local vocational school, or as suggested, the local community college or Home Depot or Lowes. You might also check around your neighborhood and see if there is a local "wood shop type person" around there willing to help someone learn. Don't forget about the liability issue, though, if you are learning at home or someone else's home. Injuries can happen. Be careful, be covered, but have fun. It is definitely an interesting hobby.

HP ElitePad 900 overview:
Ports and connectivity include microSD and a SIM slot for the integrated 3G/4G modem, along with WiFi and Bluetooth, though to keep things 9.2mm thick the more typical PC ports have been relegated to adapter dongles. Thereâs a range of connectors, including ethernet, an SD card reader, VGA, HDMI, and USB. Storage is either 32GB or 64GB of SSD, and judging by the icon on the back panel thereâs NFC too.
Alternatively, HP is pushing its docks and SmartJacket sleeves. The Docking Station is a low-profile block with four USB, wired ethernet, VGA, HDMI, power, audio-out, and a Kensington lock hole; with an external keyboard and mouse it turns the ElitePad 900 into a compact desktop.
Itâs the SmartJackets that are most interesting, however, expansion sleeves that fit neatly around the ElitePad 900 and not only protect it but add extra functionality. Initially, there will be two to choose from: the Productivity Jacket, which adds a QWERTY keyboard, various ports, and an SD card reader; and the Expansion Jacket, which adds USB, HDMI, and other ports. The latter can also be equipped with a second battery, taking the total runtime to more than 16hrs; on its own, the tablet will run for around 10hrs.
Finally, thereâs a Rugged Case for extra protection, and HP has made the ElitePad 900 to be easily opened up for those wanting to do their own maintenance. The company will provide the necessary tools to get past the magnetic clasps and other fasteners.
The HP ElitePad 900 will arrive in January 2013, though thereâs no word on pricing at this stage.
