In a Q&A with Bloomberg BusinessWeek, the Facebook CEO revealed just how big an opportunity he thinks search is for the social network.

Ever since Mark Zuckerberg took the stage at TechCrunch Disrupt last month and mentioned that Facebook was working on search, there's been plenty of speculation about just how that will play out. The examples Zuckerberg gave to illustrate how search might work suggested a potentially powerful version of question-and-answer sites such as Quora with a mixture of Yelp, the reviews site. (Here's CNET's take.)

Facebook, Zuckerberg argued, is "uniquely positioned" to answer such questions as, "What sushi restaurants have my friends gone to in New York in the last six months and Liked?" Or, "Which of my friends or friends of friends work in a company I might like to work at?'"

The whole proposition becomes even more compelling given that today Facebook announced it had reached one billion monthly users. Facebook also recently said it had begun tracking what Facebook members search for on the site.

While it's clear Facebook isn't building anything that would resemble Google, in an interview today with Bloomberg BusinessWeek Zuckerberg expanded on the enormity of the search opportunity he sees for Facebook. The idea, he said, is to expand the News Feed into a place where Facebook users don't just see what friends are saying and brands are promoting, but they in fact get a smart way to navigate the entire Web outside of Facebook's walls. And he suggests a direct attack on how Google let's users navigate the Web.

"The whole vision around News Feed was it should be like a newspaper and shouldn't just be a list of posts your friends are making," he told the magazine. "I mean we should be able to really show you interesting trends and things that are happening."

He went on:

There are already trillions of connections between friend requests and all the content that's being pushed into the system. At some point, that will start to be a better map of how you navigate the Web than the traditional link structure of the Web. I think there's an opportunity to really build something interesting there.

That's a tall order, of course, and Zuckerberg is talking about several years out. But you can be sure that Sergey Brin and his team at Google are paying close attention.

Question by mae: What does it mean to "flash a phone" or Unlock a phone? What does that mean? Is it possible to take any phone from any network and put it on your network you want to use(bsides cdma and gsm switching)? Best answer for What does it mean to "flash a phone" or Unlock a phone?:

Answer by Wireless Buddy
Flashing means to update the software on your phone. Unlocking is basically being able to use your GSM phone on any GSM carrier. For example, after unlocking my T-Mobile handset, I can put my Cingular SIM card into it.

Answer by Mike
Flash means connecting to the data port on the phone and reprogramming the on board chip which contains the software that controls the phone. Unlocking is the process of makeing a phone work with a SIM card from any mobile network. Some phones which are subsidised by the networks are locked to that network so that you can't take a SIM card from another provider and use the phone on their network. Normally you enter a unlock code on the phone keypad, this normally has to be purchased from your provider for a fee of course. However there are cheaper grey sources of unlock codes.

Summary: The Microsoft-Barnes & Noble joint venture, formerly called NewCo, is now officially known as Nook Media LLC, and is a subsidiary of B&N.

The "NewCo" venture formed by Microsoft and Barnes & Noble back in April 2012 -- now known officially as Nook Media LLC -- has received final regulatory approval, the pair announced on October 4.

nookhdplus

"Microsoft and Barnes & Noble's strategic partnership in NOOK Media LLC will enable the companies to advance world-class digital reading experiences to the hundreds of millions of customers they jointly serve," according to the press release issued to mark the occasion.

Nook Media LLC includes the digital and college businesses of Barnes & Noble. It is backed by a $ 300 million investment from Microsoft. According to today's press release, Nook Media "will continue to have a very close and mutually beneficial relationship with Barnes & Noble's retail stores."

Nook Media is a Barnes & Noble subsidiary, not a separate company, at least for now. From today's release:

"As previously announced, there is no set timetable for Barnes & Noble's review of strategic options for its investment in NOOK Media LLC. There can be no assurance that the review will result in a strategic separation or the creation of a stand-alone public company. Barnes & Noble does not intend to comment further regarding the review unless and until a decision is made."

It's not known exactly what Nook Media will provide, beyond a promised Windows 8 Nook app which will be downloadable from the Windows 8 app store, and which will be free to consumers.

A B&N filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission back in May fueled the speculation fires further with mention of a possible Microsoft Reader that could include an interface to the Nook Media Store. The 55 mentions in the same SEC filing of "Windows Phone" had some of us conjecturing that there could be a B&N/NewCo Windows Phone OS-based reader or mini-tablet in the wings.

As of this week, it seems there's not going to be a "Wook" (Windows-based Nook) available this holiday season, after all. It also seems B&N won't be offering or directly integrating with Microsoft's Xbox Live video or Marketplace service, either.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (AP) â€" Google and U.S. publishers have settled a longstanding dispute over Google's book-scanning project. A lawsuit filed by authors remains, though, leaving the project in question.

The Association of American Publishers and Google Inc. announced their settlement on Thursday to end a lawsuit filed by five publishers in October 2005.

Google already has scanned more than 20 million books. Publishers and authors sued, saying the project violated their copyrights. Authors' and publishers' groups had settled with Google before, but a federal judge tossed the deal following objections. One point of contention was the fact that books were included unless Google was informed that an author or publisher objected.

Google and the publishers say the new settlement won't require court approval because it involves only parties to the litigation. Publishers will get to choose which books are included.

"We are pleased that this settlement addresses the issues that led to the litigation," said Tom Allen, president and CEO of the publishers group. "It shows that digital services can provide innovative means to discover content while still respecting the rights of copyright-holders."

Michael J. Boni, a lawyer for The Authors Guild, said he was "cautiously optimistic" about the prospects to make progress in the rest of the case now that the publishers have settled.

"We're delighted that Google and the publishers forged an agreement," Boni said. "We see that as a sign of Google's willingness (to be open) to the concept of settlement. And we hope we can get to the bargaining table as soon as we can.

Boni said authors and publishers have been working separately with Google after the court rejected the first settlement.

U.S. District Judge Denny Chin in Manhattan in March 2011 rejected a $ 125 million settlement between Google and authors and publishers after hundreds of objections to the deal were made by Google rivals, consumer watchdogs, academic experts, literary agents and even foreign governments.

The judge criticized the access Google would have to so-called orphan works â€" out-of-print books whose writers could not be located â€" saying the deal gave the company "a de facto monopoly over unclaimed works."

The Department of Justice had highlighted the issue in 2009 when it concluded that the agreement probably violated antitrust law and could decrease competition among U.S. publishers and drive up prices for consumers.

The court case was brought after Google in 2004 announced it had agreed with several major research libraries to digitally copy books and other writings in their collections. The authors and publishers sought financial damages and a court order to block the copying when they sued Google in 2005 after Google failed to obtain copyright permission to scan the books.

A deal was first reached to settle the claims in 2008 and was tentatively approved by the judge in November 2009.

Your not eligible for an upgrade if your only 7 months in, you need to call AT&T and ask what your options actually are.

Carriers generally approve upgrades for lines of service that are at least 22 months into a 24-month contract and in good financial standing, then you're eligible for an upgrade (contract extension) and get a new phone at a discounted price or for free. However, If your phone is broken, lost, or just needs to be replaced, you can purchase a used or new unlocked phone as a replacement without extending your current service contract. Starbucks customers can now use Passbook on their iOS 6 devices to pay for coffee, check their balance, and collect rewards.

iOS 6 users who want to grab a cup of coffee at Starbucks can now pay for it through their iPhones.

Launched yesterday, the latest update to the Starbucks iOS app stirs in support for Apple's Passbook.

Starbucks Card owners can add their accounts to Passbook directly through the app. Once that's done, customers can pay for food and beverages, check their card balances, reload the card with more cash, and add rewards to score free drinks, all through the iPhone.

Unveiled in iOS 6, Passbook lets users store electronic copies of tickets, coupons, boarding passes, and loyalty cards.

Like any new feature, Passbook will likely have to wait awhile before it gets adopted by more of the business world. But such companies as McDonald's, Airbnb, and Eventbrite have already updated their mobile apps to integrate Passbook.

Starbucks promised Passbook support before October but went a bit past its deadline in brewing up the feature.

The Starbucks app doesn't yet support the iPhone 5's 16:9 aspect ratio. So users are stuck with the 4:3 format with black bars on top and bottom. But now that Passbook support is cooking, maybe iPhone 5 optimization is next on Starbucks' menu.

Question by dadumdadum: Why is it correct to say "I haven't a mobile phone" instead of "I don't have a mobile phone"? In the sentence "I don't have a mobile phone," the verb to do functions as a helping verb, correct? So would it be correct to take out the helping verb TO DO and negate the main verb of TO HAVE? Hence, "I haven't a mobile phone." Thanks :D Best answer for Why is it correct to say "I haven't a mobile phone" instead of "I don't have a mobile phone"?:

Answer by crrllpm
"I haven't a mobile phone" is correct but seldom used. "I haven't got a mobile phone" or "I don't have a mobile phone" are more common. In English the usage of a phrase or word tends to make more acceptable.

Answer by Nick
I don't have a cellphone

Answer by Pyar
American English ... I ain't got no mobile phone .

Answer by chasvanblom
That juxtaposition would not apply to correct English verbiage. The ACTION verb being (to) HAVE % i.e. "posses" a mobile telephone requires the adverb "not" to immediately preceed the verb.

Question by bannerism: i have cingular and will a "go phone" phone work with a regular contract since my phone is broken? my phone is broken and i wondered if i could go buy a "go phone" and then like take my sim card out of my phone and put it in the go phone and use the go phone with my contract. this sounds kinda confusing. Best answer for i have cingular and will a "go phone" phone work with a regular contract since my phone is broken?:

Answer by pathfinder
Before you do anything, talk to someone at Cingular about this.

Answer by dragonfly
Yes,I had to do that, too. Just take the sim card out of the back, under the battery, and replace it with the new one. Then get a phone card for your go phone, and call the number on the back of the card, and add the money to the account. Mine gave me problems because it wouldn't tell me the number, you'll hcan save a new one,so,do what I did,and just call someone from it,and ask them what the number shows up as in caller id,then you can add the money to the account

Answer by Thomas P
No they will not work. All you have to do is change your SIM card you will see

Answer by Tony Montana
Yes it does, buy the pay as you go phone dont even acivate it(Walmart, anywhere but cingular stores i guess, sometime they dont let you) and take the sim from the broken Cingular one put it on the prepay, tada done. This makes the difference of 100s some dollars in between the Go phone or retail price of the same mode. Dont activate the prepay, you dont need too.

iPhone 5 by Apple The biggest thing to happen to iPhone since iPhone. Creating an entirely new design meant inventing entirely new technology When we envisioned the new iPhone, we landed on a remarkably thin and light design. But it's nearly impossible to make a device so thin and so light without sacrificing features or performance. We could have taken the easy way out and designed something more reasonable and less remarkable. But we didn't. If the technology didn't exist, we invented it. If a component wasn't small enough, we re-imagined it. If convention was standing in the way, we left it behind. The result is iPhone 5: the thinnest, lightest, fastest iPhone ever. iPhone 5 is just 7.6 millimeters thin. To make that happen, Apple engineers had to think small, component by component. They created a nano-SIM card, which is 44 percent smaller than a micro-SIM. They also developed a unique cellular solution for iPhone 5. The conventional a pproach to building LTE into a world phone uses two chips â€" one for voice, one for data. On iPhone 5, both are on a single chip. The intelligent, reversible Lightning connector is 80 percent smaller than the 30-pin connector. The 8MP iSight camera has even more features â€" like panorama and dynamic low-light mode â€" yet it's 20 percent smaller. And the new A6 chip is up to 2x faster than the A5 chip but 22 percent smaller. Even with so much inside, iPhone 5 is 20 percent lighter and 18 percent thinner than iPhone 4S. It`s our thinnest ...

Monetization makes you do crazy things, and none perhaps so crazy as Facebook encouraging users to promote their own lives so as to make them stand out among their friends. The promoted posts trials allowing individuals to highlight particular updates for a fee is one of the odder transitions from business Facebook use to personal users; meanwhile, founder Mark Zuckerberg tells BusinessWeek he’s “optimistic” about mobile monetization, but falls short of actually outlining Facebook’s plans to squeeze cash out of the 600m mobile users.

Asked about where the next big jump in user figures will come from, Zuckerberg highlights mobile for its massive growth. “The big thing is obviously going to be mobile. There are 5 billion people in the world who have phones, and a billion people using Facebook” the social CEO said. “There are actually already 600 million people using Facebook on phones, so that’s growing really quickly. And as more phones become smartphones, it’s just this massive opportunity.”

Exactly how Facebook plans to take advantage of that opportunity, however, is unclear. It’s not a new problem, either; worried whispers around Facebook’s mobile users not pulling their weight in terms of site income were circulating prior to the company’s IPO, and Zuckerberg himself fingered the gap in strategy in interviews last week.

“There are a lot of different bets that we’re making. A lot of it over the next few years is going to come down to mobile. There is this funnel that I think is pretty clear and in our favor, which is there are going to be more people using mobile devices. There are already 5 billion so that’s where the user growth is going to come from. We already know that people who use Facebook on mobile use it more, spend more time on it” Mark Zuckerberg

One possible area of development could be the overlap between commerce and mobile use. Research has already shown the growth of mobile devices among users comparing purchases, even if they still often return to their desktop in order to complete the transaction. Zuckerberg hints that there’s potential in “what services can get built now that every company can assume they can get access to knowing who everyone’s friends are” and predicts “there’s about to be a big push in commerce,” perhaps a lucrative one if Facebook can leverage its mobile users and take a cut from any shopping virtual spree they go on.

“Over the long term I also think we’re going to make more money per amount of time that people are spending on mobile, because it has this focus as a device. It’s more like TV, where you’re doing one thing at a time” Zuckerberg concludes. “The advertising and monetizing has to be integrated in, whereas on desktop we kind of reached this equilibrium where there’s the content and then the ads off to the side of it. So I’m really optimistic about that.”

The first step toward such integration is Facebook Gifts, allowing users to buy their friends real-world gifts even if they don’t know their address, clothes size, or other personal preferences.

Facebook has reached 1 billion people who are "actively" using the social network every month, the company announced today.

"If you're reading this: thank you for giving me and my little team the honor of serving you. Helping a billion people connect is amazing, humbling and by far the thing I am most proud of in my life," CEO Mark Zuckerberg said on Facebook's online newsroom

The social network, which started in a dorm room in 2004, reached the historic milestone at 12:45 p.m. PT on September 14. This now puts one in seven people in the world on the social network.

Zuckerberg also announced the milestone on NBC's Today show. The milestone does not include bots or fake users but real people with accounts who log into the site every month, NBC reported.

If Facebook were a country, it would be the third largest in the world, behind China with 1.34 billion people and India with 1.2 billion.

According to Facebook, the site has seen:

  • 1.13 trillion "likes"
  • 140.3 billion friend connections
  • 219 billion photos uploaded (265 billion in all if deleted photos are counted)
  • 17 billion location check-ins
  • 62.6 million songs played 22 billion times since September 2011

The median age of users is 22 years old, Facebook said. When the social network hit 500 million users in July 2010, the median age was 23. People who joined in July 2010 now have an average of 305 friends.

The company also has more than 600 million mobile users -- up by 48 million from 552 million in June -- a key metric for those in developing nations who may not have stable access to a fixed-line Internet connection.

make sure that the base is connected to a power outlet that works, and that the phone jack is connected... then place the handset back onto the base unit to make sure it is registered... then try again... if it still fails, try moving the phone to a different location - there might be too much wireless interference where you have the phone connected...

Acer’s Windows 8 tablet, the Iconia W700, will hit shelves on October 26 the company has confirmed, one of the first slates to run Microsoft’s new platform. Announced back at Computex, the Iconia W700 has an 11.6-inch 1920 x 1080 Full HD IPS LCD touchscreen, with a choice of Ivy Bridge based Intel Core i3 or i5 processors lurking inside.

There’s also WiFi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth, a 1-megapixel front-facing camera, and a 5-megapixel main camera good for 1080p HD on the back. USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt is also onboard, and Acer will throw in an HDMI-to-VGA adapter if you’re not quite up to speed with the latest display connectivity. Storage is either a 64GB or 128GB SSD.

However, it’s the cradle which is perhaps most eye-catching, Acer’s asymmetrical design making slotting the W700 in straightforward, and opening up plenty of extra ports. It’ll also recharge the battery, which Acer says is good for eight hours of runtime.

Pricing will begin at $ 799.99 for the Core i3 model, rising to $ 999.99. More on the Acer Iconia W700 in our full hands-on.

Gadget Mania

We’ve all had it happen to us before: we’re browsing the web when we’re greeted with a pop-up alert claiming that our computer is infected and that our immediate action is required. Most tech savvy people wouldn’t be tricked into falling for that, but for a while, these scams had many computer users legitimately scared. A handful of people involved in one of these scareware scams have been ordered by a US District Court to pay out a whopping $ 163 million FTC fine today, after it was discovered that they scammed more than 1 million people out of money.

Those people, Kristy Ross, Sam Jain, and Daniel Sundin, were hit with the $ 163 million fine to repay the victims they ripped off throughout the years. In addition, Ross has been banned from selling software that interferes with a user’s computer. Ross and co. were responsible for one of these seemingly endless scareware schemes, alerting Internet-goers to non-existent problems on their computers, and then charging $ 39.95 and up to “fix” the issues. The scam ran from 2000 to 2008, and in that time, the trio pulled in tens of millions of dollars from confused and scared PC users.

Three other people involved in the case, Marc D’Souza, Maurice D’Souza, and James Reno, settled with the FTC in 2010, and aren’t required to pay back the $ 168 million. The group operated under the name of Innovative Marketing Inc., which bought space for legitimate-looking ads on major websites. When users would click on the ads, they would be taken to an Innovative Marketing website, where they were told that any number of malicious programs were discovered on their computer and then urged to purchase bogus software to fix the issues.

This is a big step in the right direction for the FTC, but unfortunately, scareware still runs rampant today. It’s a problem that probably won’t ever go away entirely, so users need to stay vigilant when it comes to surfing the Internet and believing those illegitimate alerts. This may not be the last we’ve heard of scareware, but it’s definitely the last we’ve heard of Innovative Marketing Inc.

Question by Jeffrey Rolek: Is "Dr. Claw's Dump N' Pump" for Sega Genesis Real? I saw the "Angry Video Game Nerd" doing a review of "Kid Kool" for NES. At the end he mentioned other game with worse control. And one of them is a Sega Genesis game called "Dr Claw's Dump N' Pump". It features Dr. Claw form "Inspector Gadget" plunging a toilet on the cover of the cartridge. I noticed Sega's official seal of approval on it. But I can't seem to find any videos/images of gameplay anywhere on the Internet. Is this game really real or is it nothing but a practical joke to fool the audience? I hope that it's real so we can see it on the Nerd's future episodes! Best answer for Is "Dr. Claw's Dump N' Pump" for Sega Genesis Real?:

Answer by John
Nope, just Chuck Testa.

Answer by cobrajet
It was a joke. The game is not real.

viewdle

Google, according to a report by Forbes, has acquired Viewdle, an augmented reality and facial recognition startup. Forbes says the price was likely around $ 30 million, but we are still trying to confirm both the acquisition and the price. The Viewdle board, the Forbes report says, approved the acquisition last week and the company plans to tell its employees about it tomorrow afternoon.

Update: Viewdle just returned our email: “We do not have any comment.” Google has not yet responded to our emails. Google also just responded with a comment that it doesn’t comment on rumors and speculation.

Update 2 (3pm PT): We have learned a few more things about the company since we first posted this story. We’ve updated parts of this post to reflect this.

The company was founded in the Ukraine in 2006 and is currently headquartered in Silicon Valley with operations across Europe and South America, including, of course, Ukraine. Viewdle, which won the 2008 LeWeb startup competition, previously received funding from numerous venture firms, including KCP Capital, Anthem Venture Partners, Best Buy Capital, Blackberry and Qualcomm. The company, we hear, raised about $ 250,000 to $ 500,000 from an angel investor. Anthem Venture Partners then invested about $ 2 million in a Series A round in 2008 and Qualcomm, Best Buy and Blackberry invested in a $ 10 million Series B round in 2010. The founders’ equity in the company, a source close to Viewdle tells us, was heavily diluted in the process and the entrepreneurial team will likely see very little of the purchase price.

We’ve also learned that this is the second time Viewdle is in acquisition talks with Google. The two companies first talked in 2008. In 2011, Motorola was also interested in acquiring the company, but the acquisition fell through after Google acquired Motorola.

Its apps, including SocialCamera and games like ThirdEye, are currently all available on Android, though the company is also currently testing an iOS version of its Face Recognition SDK. Viewdle also owns a number of patents related to facial recognition. While Viewdle’s technology has always been impressive, it looks like the company’s business never took off.

Google previously bought at least two similar startups in the past. In July 2011, the company acquired the Pittsburgh-based facial recognition company PittPatt and all the way back in 2006, it bought the Germany biometrics company Neven Vision.

There is clearly a lot of interested in facial recognition startups right now. Face.com, for example, recently acquired Face.com for just under $ 60 million (though some of that was in Facebook stock, which is likely worth less now). Still, as Facebook’s recent run-in with German privacy advocates shows, facial recognition is still a rather sensitive subject.

Viewdle (www.viewdle.com) is the only independent mobile-focused visual analysis company. Viewdle enables the camera to inspire new social experiences and effortless communication. Viewdle is creating new user experiences in mobile gaming, social networking, social media, advertising and marketing, with the introduction of computer vision and recognition technologies to consumer products. Its best-of-breed recognition technology has been developed by its global research and development team, which includes nine PhDs. Available Viewdle products (http://viewdle.com/products/index.html): SocialCamera, a face recognition-based photo-socializing product for...
