Summary: Facebook's engineering team offers a peek beneath the hood of the App Center recommendation engine.
Facebook is offering a behind the scenes look at the building of the recommendation engine for the App Center.
In a blog post on Wednesday morning, Facebook engineers discussed challenges they face in sifting through and discovering the most relevant apps for hundreds of millions of people on the world's largest social network and how those recommendations are made throughout the App Center.
Facebook argues that this is especially important because the App Center has already evolved into a major traffic channel for many developers since its August 1st launch, citing that 220 million people visit the App Center each month on average. Approximately 40 percent of those visitors are said to be more likely to return the next day.
Essentially, the App Center functions the same way as the news feed. Both forums are intended to serve as a centralized place for discovering the news (or apps) most relevant to the individual user.
While building an algorithm to achieve this for 950 million individual users and counting is theoretically impossible, Facebook engineers are giving it their best try with the recommendation engine, which learns user's preferences to produce app recommendations that are socially relevant as well as timely.
That algorithm breaks down to three key components: candidate selection, scoring/ranking, and real-time updates.
Here's a more detailed explanation of what goes on under the hood, according to the Facebook engineering team:
The system follows an aggregator-leaf architecture-very similar to that of a search engine. Because we have a lot of data, it is necessary to partition the objects into multiple subsets (shards) where each leaf node is only responsible for one subset. The aggregator acts as a central controller, receiving the recommendation request from the front end web server and distributing to leaf nodes. Each leaf node then finds a set of best candidates from the objects stored on the local machine and returns them to the aggregator. The aggregator then performs a final merge and returns the best results to the client.
After that, the frontend collects user feedback, which is then integrated into the app recommendation engine. We scale this system in two ways: The first is to increase the number of shards so that we can handle more data. The second way is to have multiple replicas so that we can handle more traffic. Using replicas also adds redundancy to the system, which allows us to tolerate the failure of some machines.
There are more details over on the Facebook Developers blog, but the basic lesson that the App Center team is sharing is that it's all about quality and user ratings over time.
This could be applied to nearly any app store at this point, but in Facebook's case, the social network's approach to this is based on its own system that randomly surveys users to rate apps after use.
From there, engineers found that the number of daily active users "was a good measure of how large the app is, while the number of monthly active users could be inflated by spikes of activity during the month." Thus, Facebook's formula for determining an app's quality is "a function of its average rating as well as average daily active users."
Question by Morgan: What is the price of the sprint phone "palm pre" ? our plan ends soon, in september or sometime around there, and i'm looking for phones that i might want. i really like the palm pre and i want to know what the price is whenever we go in for new phones and they give us the discount and what not. and to have it, do you have to have certain things like internet? i also like the blackberry curve 8350i one of the "smart phones". same questions for that, and i don't quite understand the principles of the mail in rebates. help is appreciated :] Best answer for What is the price of the sprint phone "palm pre" ?:
Answer by Joe Dollar
for the pre: you pay 300 up front and pay one time additional fees in your next phone bill. you receive a 100 dollar rebate through the mail. my sprint rep filled the rebate form out for me, all i had to do is drop it in the mail. you have to have the unlimited data plan with the pre--that includes internet, text, and videomail (even though the pre doesn't record vid). i have the 400 min plan which is under $ 70. btw, its a great phone.

Direct digital manufacturing company Stratasys may have pulled the lease on a 3-D printer rented out by a group of unlicensed internet gunsmiths. But theyâre all for making money by printing guns. According to internal sales documents acquired by Danger Room, Stratasys is working with some of the worldâs top firearms-makers today.
According to those company documents, two ârepresentative customersâ for Stratasysâs 3-D printing machines include Knightâs Armament Company â" which makes gun grips and produces its own line of firearms â" and Remington Arms, the countryâs largest producer of shotguns and rifles. A presentation by the companyâs Direct Digital Manufacturing Group dated to January 2010 also determined that the companyâs main âselling focus will be to the Aerospace and Defense Markets,â and discussed building closer ties to the military and defense industry at various Defense Department, Army and Navy expos, including an âunmanned vehicle conference.â
In addition, Stratasys has become a regular exhibitor at the annual Shot Show in Las Vegas, which promotes itself as âthe largest and most comprehensive trade show for all professionals involved with the shooting sports, hunting and law enforcement industries.â Stratasys is also listed by Shot Show in a January 2012 exhibitor webpage under the categories: ammunition, firearms, âfirearm parts/gunsmithing,â and âscopes, sights telescopes and accessories.â
In July 2011, a forum poster who identified himself as a New England distributor of Stratasys machines, said he had âa database of CAD [computer aided design] 1911 parts available to me,â referring to the famous pistol. The poster claimed that âRemington, Savage, Sig-Sauer and possibly others use systems from Stratasys that make parts out of engineering thermoplastics,â and also boasted of making a frame and slide for a M1911A1, âa Luger, etc.â
But it was a proposed gunsmithing venture that got Cody Wilson in trouble. A second-year law student and director of the Defense Distributed online collective, which intends to print a plastic gun and freely distribute its schematics online, Wilson had leased a uPrint SE printer from Stratasys with a portion of the $ 20,000 in funds raised by internet supporters. But last week, the company pulled the lease after getting wind of Wiki Weapon, the groupâs gun-manufacturing and schematics-trading project. Stratasys told Wilson, âIt is the policy of Stratasys not to knowingly allow its printers to be used for illegal purposes.â
Neither Stratasys nor Remington responded to requests to comment for this story. âI donât want to start a spat with them,â Wilson says. âBut look, Stratasys made a choice, didnât they? They chose a side in the democratization of manufacturing by this little decision.â
Wilson maintains heâd done nothing illegal by building a plastic pistol with the printer, and hadnât planned to. But Stratasys pointed to Wilsonâs lack of a federal firearm manufacturerâs license, which he may not have needed. Emphasis on the âmay,â as the legality involves a complex series of overlapping and (sometimes vague) laws about what you can and canât manufacture in your garage.
Thereâs also a big gap between the kinds of machines Remington can deploy to build components, and the budget printer that Defense Distributed intended to use. Stratasys makes a wide range of systems with different price points, with varying tensile strengths and fidelity in the finished products. A lease on the uPrint SE starts at $ 299 per month and buying one can cost up to $ 20,000. But a high-end Stratasys Fortus 900mc (.pdf) can set you back a total price of $ 380,000, and is also capable of printing a much wider variety of materials up to three times as accurately. The closest comparison to Defense Distributedâs (former) printer in the arms industry is a Dimension Elite 3D Printer â" spotted in the offices of one gun manufacturer â" which starts leasing from a higher $ 560 per month and costs a total of more than $ 30,000, but has similar specifications.
Now another difference. Itâs usually legal to build your own pistol without a license. But if you intend to sell it, then you need to apply for a Title I-class federal firearms manufacturerâs license. However, Wilson never intended to sell the pistol. His plan was to simply â" and possibly much more worrying to firearms regulators â" build a working prototype and then share the schematics online for anyone to download.
On the other hand, a plastic pistol may â" the law doesnât exactly account for it â" fall under the National Firearms Actâs definition of a Title II weapon, which also includes machine guns and easily concealable âgadget guns.â You need a license to manufacture those, regardless of whether you intend to sell the weapon or not. Thereâs also the Undetectable Firearms Act, which prohibits guns that can sneak through airport metal detectors. That act, though, gives an exception for prototypes by licensed manufacturers and weapons built by government agencies. For instance, that means the CIAâs secret spy guns are quite legal.
The exemption could also mean Remington could be printing plastic pistols (or close enough prototypes) that can defeat airport metal detectors, but be exempt under the law if theyâre keeping them in the warehouse. More likely, the odds are that Remington â" like other firearms companies â" could be using the machines for rapid prototyping of standard gun components. Stratasys machines have been used by Ashbury Precision Ordnance to make a chassis center section for a Tac-50 sniper rifle. Detroit Gun Works used Stratasys machines to build a prototype upper and lower receiver of a .308 caliber pistol. Stratasys even tweeted about it.
Nor is Stratasys the only additive manufacturing company to work with weapons and defense. Competitor 3D Systems has sought to expand into the defense market at the same time 3D Systemsâs CEO, Abe Reichental, has pushed the printing industry to prevent âunlawful printing of regulated gun partsâ before âsomeone dangerous hijacked this capability to do evil.â Think of it like a version of Googleâs âDonât Be Evilâ mantra for the desktop manufacturing industry.
In August, Reichental said companies âshould join together so parents donât have to worry their child might print something illegally and communities donât have to worry that someone irresponsible will open fire with a printed weapon and companies donât have to worry about counterfeiting and piracy.â
But Reichental never suggested that the big firearms manufacturers shouldnât enjoy the many benefits of rapid prototyping and additive manufacturing.

We say stuff like "I'm going out with him" and instead of saying make out we call it snogging. But we just say answer the phone like you do, or maybe "The phone is ringing, can you pick it up cos I'm busy." Hope I helped XD
Answer by Drop Of Jupiter
Answer the phone. Going out on a date. Tricky, that. If you are going out for, say, a romantic meal, you are 'going out on a date'. Simple. If you are with friends, you are 'meeting up' with them. If you are in a relationship with a person, you 'go out with' them. We say 'lovely', 'joy' (sarcastically, with a smile on your face, to express a dislike for something). We also say 'fair play' and 'fair enough' (as in, 'OK, good reasoning').

We say "Bollocks" if something is bad, but if something is good we say it's "The Dogs Bollocks." Confusing,i'nt it?
